Schon als junger Mann besuchte er h\u00e4ufig die Theater in London und Birmingham. Er las und studierte Theaterst\u00fccke und besa\u00df eine umfangreiche Bibliothek mit St\u00fccken englischer und amerikanischer Dramatiker.<\/p>\n

Sein erstes B\u00fchnenst\u00fcck SEND FOR PAUL TEMPLE, das vom 25. Oktober bis 6. November 1943 im Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham aufgef\u00fchrt wurde, basierte auf den Radioserien SEND FOR PAUL TEMPLE und PAUL TEMPLE AND THE FRONT PAGE MEN. Das St\u00fcck und seine Auff\u00fchrung gerieten in Vergessenheit, bis Melvyn Barnes es bei seinen Recherchen f\u00fcr sein Buch THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE WORKS OF FRANCIS DURBRIDGE ausgrub und eine Kopie des St\u00fccks in der British Library im Archiv des Lord Chamberlain (der als Theaterzensor fungierte) fand.<\/p>\n

SUDDENLY AT HOME von 1971 wird oft als Francis Durbridges erstes B\u00fchnenst\u00fcck bezeichnet, aber abgesehen von SEND FOR PAUL TEMPLE gab es in den 1960er Jahren mehrere Inszenierungen eines St\u00fccks in Deutschland, das sp\u00e4ter als MURDER WITH LOVE bekannt wurde. Darin spielten unter anderem unter der Regie von Hans Schweikart die beiden popul\u00e4ren Darsteller Albert Lieven und Horst Tappert. Mehrere seiner St\u00fccke wurden auch als Fernsehspiele in Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien und Polen adaptiert, obwohl sie im Vereinigten K\u00f6nigreich nicht f\u00fcr das Fernsehen adaptiert wurden.

Suddenly at Home<\/strong>, ein St\u00fcck in zwei Akten, das am 8. Juni 1971 im Theatre Royal Windsor uraufgef\u00fchrt wurde und anschlie\u00dfend vom 30. September 1971 bis zum 16. Juni 1973 mehr als 700 Mal im Fortune Theatre in London gespielt wurde. Unter der Regie von Basil Coleman spielten Gerald Harper, Penelope Keith, Terence Longdon und Rula Lenska die Hauptrollen. \u2013 Deutscher Titel: PL\u00d6TZLICH UND UNERWARTET. In der deutschen Urauff\u00fchrung spielten Heinz Drache und Marianne Koch die Titelrollen, Heinz Drache f\u00fchrte auch Regie. 1983 verfilmt f\u00fcr das ZDF.<\/p>\n

The Gentle Hook<\/strong>, ein St\u00fcck in zwei Akten, wurde am 30. September 1974 im Yvonne Arnaud Theatre Guildford uraufgef\u00fchrt und lief anschlie\u00dfend vom 21. Dezember 1974 bis zum 26. April 1975 im Piccadilly Theatre London. Unter der Regie von Basil Coleman spielten in London unter anderem Dinah Sheriden, Jack Watling, Raymond Francis und Tony Anholt mit. Deutscher Titel: DIES BILDNIS IST ZUM MORDEN SCH\u00d6N (BRD) bzw. DER ELEGANTE DREH (DDR). In der westdeutschen Urauff\u00fchrung in Hamburg 1976 spielte Ruth-Maria Kubitschek die Titelrolle. 1978 in der DDR und 1987 in der BRD verfilmt.<\/p>\n

Murder with Love<\/strong> ist ein Theaterst\u00fcck in zwei Akten, das am 2. A Touch of Danger<\/strong>, ein St\u00fcck in zwei Akten, das 1987 im Theatre Royal Windsor uraufgef\u00fchrt wurde, bevor es auf Tournee ging und anschlie\u00dfend vom 18. September 1988 bis zum 4. M\u00e4rz 1989 im Whitehall Theatre London aufgef\u00fchrt wurde.
